What Is a Tooth Extraction?

A tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the jawbone. Extractions may be necessary when a tooth is too damaged or infected to be repaired, or if it causes crowding or interferes with orthodontic treatment.

At our Henderson office, we offer both simple and surgical extractions, depending on the condition and position of the tooth.

Common Reasons for Tooth Extraction

  • Severe tooth decay or infection
  • Advanced gum disease (periodontitis)
  • Cracked or broken teeth beyond repair
  • Impacted wisdom teeth
  • Preparing for braces or dentures
  • Overcrowded teeth

What Happens After a Tooth Is Removed?

After an extraction, it’s normal to experience some mild swelling or discomfort for a few days. Following our care instructions will help you recover quickly. Most patients can return to normal activities within a day or two.

We’ll also talk with you about your tooth replacement options to restore full function and appearance. Leaving a gap untreated can lead to shifting teeth or bite problems over time.

FAQs About Dental Fillings

Stick to soft, cool foods like applesauce, yogurt, smoothies, and mashed potatoes for the first few days. Avoid hot, crunchy, or spicy foods that may irritate the extraction site. Slowly reintroduce firmer foods as healing progresses.
You can begin eating soft foods once the numbness wears off, usually within a few hours. Be careful to chew away from the extraction site. Avoid straws and hot foods to protect the blood clot.
You should keep the gauze in place with gentle pressure for 30 to 60 minutes after the procedure. Replace it as needed if bleeding continues. Once bleeding has significantly reduced or stopped, you can stop using gauze.
Dairy products can sometimes interfere with antibiotics and may leave a residue that disturbs healing. Some dentists recommend avoiding dairy for the first 24 hours to reduce the risk of infection or clot disruption.
Smoking is strongly discouraged for at least 72 hours after extraction. Smoking can delay healing and increase the risk of dry socket, a painful condition caused by a dislodged blood clot.
No, it’s best to avoid alcohol for at least 24 to 48 hours. Alcohol can interfere with healing, increase bleeding, and negatively interact with prescribed medications.
Avoid hot beverages like coffee for the first 24 hours, as heat can dislodge the clot and prolong bleeding. Once healing has started, you can slowly reintroduce warm drinks.
Most simple extractions take about 20 to 40 minutes. Surgical extractions may take longer depending on the complexity. Your dentist will walk you through the estimated time before the procedure.
Follow your dentist’s aftercare instructions closely. Rest, avoid strenuous activity, eat soft foods, and keep the extraction site clean. Use ice packs and prescribed medications to manage swelling or discomfort.
Most healing occurs within the first week, but full healing of the gum and bone can take several weeks. Follow-up care helps ensure a smooth recovery.
Avoid mouthwash for the first 24 hours, as it can disrupt clot formation. After that, rinse gently with saltwater or use a dentist-recommended rinse.
Apply firm pressure with gauze for 30 to 60 minutes. If bleeding continues, replace the gauze and bite down again. Contact your dentist if heavy bleeding persists.
You can brush your teeth the night of your extraction, but avoid the surgical area. Resume gentle brushing near the site after 24 hours, taking care not to disturb the clot.

Great experience!! Staff is friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. My friend recommended this dental office because of the professional treatment, and because prices are truly much more affordable than other offices in the area. The denist who helped me is Dr Kevin Dionisio, and I am very grateful. I have a bridge in back of my front upper teeth that was feeling loose. It was beginning to cause anxiety and stress whenever I ate or brushed my teeth. I had been to some other well-intentioned and knowledgeable dental offices that wanted to remove the bridge, along with several teeth, and advised me of the unfortunate and extremely huge amounts of out-of-pocket costs there would be. I had been hoping for quite while that I could find a dentist who would say they could simply try re-cementing the bridge to my teeth, and that is exactly what I found at Comprehensive Dental. Dr Dionisio looked at my x-rays and teeth, and provided me with confidence that my teeth are in good condition. And then regarding the re-cememting, he was professionally and kindly upfront, and advised me that there was no guarantee on how effective the cementing would be, nor how long it would last. Maybe a few days, maybe years. I understood the situation very clearly. So the re-cementing procedure was done, binding the edges of the bridge to my teeth. I immediately felt the difference! The loose-ness was gone! It has only been about a week since the procedure, and I have not had any problems. In fact, everything feels quite firm and secure. The re-cementing has provided me with a great deal of relief when chewing food and brushing my teeth. Of course, I am not biting really hard, nor applying extreme pressure to my teeth. Of course, there would be risks in doing that. I would say, however, that I am now eating and brushing my teeth quite normally. I am very grateful that everything feels good again. I had to pay several hundred dollars for the re-cementing, but I have to say it has been worth it. Once again, I am very grateful to have found this dental office and Dr Dionisio.
My experience was very welcoming from the moment I arrived. The staff made me feel comfortable and at ease throughout my visit. They are a great team that works very well together, and their kindness and professionalism truly stand out. I especially appreciate how comfortable they make me feel, which is so important when visiting the dentist. I highly recommend them!
