What Is a Tooth Extraction?

A tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the jawbone. Extractions may be necessary when a tooth is too damaged or infected to be repaired, or if it causes crowding or interferes with orthodontic treatment.

At our Henderson office, we offer both simple and surgical extractions, depending on the condition and position of the tooth.

Common Reasons for Tooth Extraction

  • Severe tooth decay or infection
  • Advanced gum disease (periodontitis)
  • Cracked or broken teeth beyond repair
  • Impacted wisdom teeth
  • Preparing for braces or dentures
  • Overcrowded teeth

What to Expect During Your Tooth Extraction

We understand that tooth removal can sound intimidating, but we go out of our way to ensure your comfort every step of the way. Here is what you can expect:

Thorough Evaluation

Digital X-rays help us assess the tooth’s position and plan the procedure

Local Anesthesia

The area is fully numbed for a painless experience

Gentle Removal

We carefully remove the tooth using precise techniques to protect surrounding tissue

Post-Op Instructions

You’ll receive clear guidance to ensure smooth healing

What Happens After a Tooth Is Removed?

After an extraction, it’s normal to experience some mild swelling or discomfort for a few days. Following our care instructions will help you recover quickly. Most patients can return to normal activities within a day or two.

We’ll also talk with you about your tooth replacement options to restore full function and appearance. Leaving a gap untreated can lead to shifting teeth or bite problems over time.

FAQs About Dental Fillings

Stick to soft, cool foods like applesauce, yogurt, smoothies, and mashed potatoes for the first few days. Avoid hot, crunchy, or spicy foods that may irritate the extraction site. Slowly reintroduce firmer foods as healing progresses.
You can begin eating soft foods once the numbness wears off, usually within a few hours. Be careful to chew away from the extraction site. Avoid straws and hot foods to protect the blood clot.
You should keep the gauze in place with gentle pressure for 30 to 60 minutes after the procedure. Replace it as needed if bleeding continues. Once bleeding has significantly reduced or stopped, you can stop using gauze.
Dairy products can sometimes interfere with antibiotics and may leave a residue that disturbs healing. Some dentists recommend avoiding dairy for the first 24 hours to reduce the risk of infection or clot disruption.
Smoking is strongly discouraged for at least 72 hours after extraction. Smoking can delay healing and increase the risk of dry socket, a painful condition caused by a dislodged blood clot.
No, it’s best to avoid alcohol for at least 24 to 48 hours. Alcohol can interfere with healing, increase bleeding, and negatively interact with prescribed medications.
Avoid hot beverages like coffee for the first 24 hours, as heat can dislodge the clot and prolong bleeding. Once healing has started, you can slowly reintroduce warm drinks.
Most simple extractions take about 20 to 40 minutes. Surgical extractions may take longer depending on the complexity. Your dentist will walk you through the estimated time before the procedure.
Follow your dentist’s aftercare instructions closely. Rest, avoid strenuous activity, eat soft foods, and keep the extraction site clean. Use ice packs and prescribed medications to manage swelling or discomfort.
Most healing occurs within the first week, while granulation tissue after tooth extraction and deeper bone repair can continue for several weeks. Follow-up care helps the dentist check that recovery is on track.
Avoid mouthwash for the first 24 hours, as it can disrupt clot formation. After that, rinse gently with saltwater or use a dentist-recommended rinse.
Apply firm pressure with gauze for 30 to 60 minutes. If bleeding continues, replace the gauze and bite down again. Contact your dentist if heavy bleeding persists.
You can brush your teeth the night of your extraction, but avoid the surgical area. Resume gentle brushing near the site after 24 hours, taking care not to disturb the clot.

Dr. Kevin Major, and all of the office staff here, and assistants are absolutely incredible. From Karina, to Lani to my dental hygienist. Just WOW. They are beyond incredible for their patient care and dedication. From the moment I first called, I was on the phone with the receptionist for nearly 30 minutes. How about that for patient dedication?!! Empathy like that, is hard to come by, genuinely. It cannot be taught. She listened to my concerns and plea for help for finding the right dentist for me. She assured me I would be in good hands and well taken care of by Dr. Kevin Major. A name I had heard flung around left and right. I was intrigued and so invested. I did so much research on my dentist, and the practice itself. They got the green light from me. Now it was time to go to my first appointment. They made sure I was comfortable, heard, and taken care of. I even got my teeth professionally cleaned, and am in the process of getting all my cavities filled to go onto my orthodontics journey. From start to finish, from my consultation to the cleaning itself. I knew I had found the right dental office and dentist. This entire time, I had been searching and it was right around the corner from where I live. Dr. Major showed me all of my teeth issues, and walked me through the entire treatment plan. For once in my life, my dentist listened to me. Enthusiastic at his craft, and true passion for what he does. Proper bedside manner, and a true blessing to find a dentist that truly cares this much about your teeth health and smile as much as you do. When I say that you can genuinely tell the “good” dentists from the “bad” ones. Dr. Major is one of the good ones!! I was so frustrated with the previous dental office I saw, and how unwelcoming, rude, and money hungry they were. Horrible, terrible practices with horrible bedside manner. I felt like a walking bank, was treated as such, and not truly cared for and listened to. Going to the dentist should NOT be like this. If you are searching around for a new dentist and dental clinic… and one that will truly care and listen to your wants, needs, and concerns. You have NOW found the right place. Dr. Kevin Major is an expert in his craft, and he will educate you from start to finish. Listen to you, and make sure that you are happy with your smile. He will listen to your concerns. He will walk you through treatment, and answer all questions you may have. He gave me what most dentists I saw before him never gave me, and that is TIME. Dr. Major is the only dentist I will ever see for my teeth health and treatments. I’ll never go anywhere else. Comprehensive Dental Care, and all the staff, from Karina, to Lani, all the dental assistants, to all the hygienists and the rest of the staff at the front desk. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart for always making me feel like family. I love the good office and staff vibes always! Thanks to the front office staff for setting a good tone for the entire practice! Whoever I first spoke to initially, I don’t remember your name but thank you for your kindness! You’ve made me a patient for life! Thank you Dr. Major for taking care of me and always making dental visits, comfortable and most of all, FUNNY! See everyone next week!!
