What Is Gum Grafting?

Gum grafting is a surgical procedure that restores gum tissue lost to recession. It involves placing healthy gum tissue over exposed tooth roots to reduce sensitivity, prevent decay, and improve appearance.

At our Henderson office, we offer several types of gum grafting procedures based on your specific needs.

Types of Gum Grafts:

  • Pedicle Grafts: Tissue is repositioned from adjacent areas to cover exposed roots, ideal when nearby gum tissue is healthy.
  • Connective Tissue Grafts: A small flap of tissue is taken from the roof of your mouth and placed over the receded area.
  • Free Gingival Grafts: Tissue is taken directly from the roof of your mouth to increase gum thickness.

Why Do Gums Recede?

Gum recession can happen gradually and may not be noticeable at first. However, understanding the causes is important for prevention and timely treatment. Receding gums expose the tooth roots, increasing the risk of sensitivity, decay, and even tooth loss.

Understanding the root cause of your gum recession can help you take the right steps to protect your oral health.

Aggressive Brushing

Brushing your teeth too hard or using a hard-bristled toothbrush can wear away gum tissue over time, leading to recession.

Periodontal Disease

This bacterial infection damages gum and bone tissue, weakening the support structure of your teeth and causing gums to pull away.

Genetic Predisposition

Some people naturally have thinner gum tissue, making them more susceptible to recession even with proper oral care.

Tobacco Use

Smoking or using other tobacco products can impair blood flow to the gums, slowing healing and increasing the risk of recession.

Teeth Grinding or Clenching

Chronic grinding or clenching places excessive pressure on teeth and supporting structures, including the gums.

Hormonal Changes or Medical Conditions

Fluctuations in hormones—especially during pregnancy, menopause, or puberty—can increase gum sensitivity and the likelihood of recession. Conditions like diabetes also affect gum health.

Identifying the underlying cause is key to treating and preventing further gum recession. Our team will work with you to create a care plan that supports long-term gum and tooth health.

FAQs About Gum Grafting

A gum graft is a dental procedure used to restore receding gums by attaching healthy tissue to areas where the gums have pulled away from the teeth. This helps protect tooth roots, reduce sensitivity, and improve both function and appearance.
It may be too late for gum grafting if gum recession has led to severe bone loss or tooth instability. However, a consultation with your periodontist or dentist can help determine whether grafting is still a viable option.
Stitches typically remain in place for 7 to 14 days, depending on the type of graft and how well the area is healing. Your dentist will let you know when to return for a follow-up or stitch removal if necessary.
Yes, gum grafting is often worth it for patients with moderate to severe gum recession. It not only improves appearance but also protects exposed roots, reduces sensitivity, and helps prevent tooth loss.
Stick to soft, cool foods like smoothies, yogurt, mashed potatoes, and scrambled eggs for the first few days. Avoid spicy, crunchy, or hot foods that could irritate the surgical site.
Most patients report only mild discomfort during recovery. Local anesthesia is used during the procedure, and any soreness afterward can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.
In many cases, gum grafting is partially covered by dental insurance when deemed medically necessary. Coverage can vary, so it’s best to check with your provider in advance.

Our Patients Say The Nicest Things!

Excellent
After 25 years of not smiling, I can finally smile!!! I just received my new implants for my entire mouth and it feels so good to have a genuine smile. Dr. Greg, Dr. Le and the entire staff are amazing. They truly make you feel like a person and just a number like most doctors and dentist. They are very particular in every aspect which separates them from everyone else. I am so happy I chose Comprehension Dental and definitely recommend them to anyone who is looking for any type of dental work.
The hygienist is very thorough. She is friendly and always does a great job. The office staff is also very helpful.
Response from the owner:Love your five star review! Thanks so much Gayle! 🙂
I am totally pleased with how wonderful-this office is! First off, the office is impeccably clean, which is extremely important to me. All the front desk staff is top-notch A+ in customer service! I do not think they could find a better receptionist than the one they have as she’s amazing. My appointment started off with be introduced to Rhonda, Dr Majors dental assistant, which she took all my CT scans and x-rays. Rhonda makes you feel so comfortable right off the bat, like she’s a friend and is so thorough and helpful! Thank you, Rhonda! Then my visit I met Dr. Major. Dr Major answered every single one of my questions and thoroughly went through everything I need to know about my dental health! I never felt more comfortable with another dentist as I do with Dr. Major. You feel like you can total trust office. Thank you for everything! Looking forward to my next visit!
Emily is my hygienist. She is so nice , very careful and gentle.
Ok
If you read these, read this one, I went here because I hate the dentist, not that I want a new person to dislike, but after reading all of the reviews for the thousands of dentists in this city, this office seemed like the best of the worst, worst because there a dental office and I don't wanna go anyway. So I finally get there, get in the room, meet Monica, aka "Mo", ask for her, she is awesome, gave more of an empathetic feel rather then the usual clinical where does it hurt, ok this is what were gonna do. Start to layout my story of why im here and what im looking to have done, as a dental helper she flipped the script. Oh you need to talk tk Gregg, so im like great, nerves kick back in, anxiety kicks up, then big Gregg Hendrickson walks in, honestly... he seals the deal, gives you the honest answer, the comfort, the ok, this is the guy im comfortable letting do what I need done but don't want to, lots of dental work, they're a one stop shop, if you don't want to waste the hrs of research and happen to run across this review, know I have seen way to many dentists in my life and this place felt different, from even the pre screen interview before you, first time in 50 years I feel confident with the Dr, the staff, and I only met 3, the scheduling money lady is amazing and funny too, but alas I did not catch her name, she will know who she is when she reads this... thanks for taking care of me and I think I have found my dentist for a while
Dr Kevin is a very professional, competent dentist. Him and his staff made me feel comfortable from the beginning and have been great to me ever since.
Response from the owner:Thank you Fernando for your kind words! We appreciate having wonderful patients like you! 🙂
